Password Security

A login in a computer screen. Just the username and password fields.

Protecting your personal content is essential in today’s age. Hackers are becoming smarter and there are increasing reports on systems and accounts being hacked. Ensuring you have a strong password is essential. We’ve created a quick guide to follow to help you keep safe online:

  • Use at least eight characters – the longer the password, the better.
  • Include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numerals, and special characters.
  • Do not use previous passwords, dictionary words, repetitive characters (such as “1234”), or context-specific words (such as “computerlogin”). Remember, easy passwords don’t get harder by adding digits to them (for example, Mary900).

Here are some other tips to keep in mind:

  • Use different passwords for different accounts.
  • Change your passwords regularly – at least as often as the interval your organisation requires or if for personal, every 6-8 weeks.

Keep all passwords private, never:

  • Send them in an e-mail
  • Write them on paper or in a notebook
  • Keep them in a file on your computer or smartphone
